5 Treatments for Knee Pain When Pregnant

5 Treatments for Knee Pain When Pregnant

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing. It’s filled with joy, happiness, and baby showers. But, unfortunately, being pregnant has a couple of disadvantages as well – one of them is knee joint problems.

You will go through temporary hormonal changes and gain a little bit of weight during those nine months. Because of that, you’ll probably experience knee pain.

Knee problems during pregnancy are completely normal. Don’t worry, they will go away soon after birth!

In the meantime, there are plenty of things you can do to alleviate your pain when you are pregnant – here are five things you can try!

1. Get the right shoes

You are going to have to walk around no matter what – even if it’s for a little while. And when you do, you might experience terrible knee pain that can be easily avoided if you wear the right pair of shoes. Your average shoe has poor arch support and is nowhere near properly cushioned – and that’s something your next pair of shoes cannot feature.

It might not seem like much, but the right arch will allow your knee to stay in place and not budge unintentionally when you are walking. That alone will alleviate your knee joint pain immensely.

Properly cushioned shoes will remove unwanted stress from your feet and knees as well. That’s a perfect combo to help you with your knee issue. A great website to keep upto with the latest and best Knee Pain shoes and products in KneeForce.com

2. Do low-impact exercise

This may sound counterintuitive – but it’s true. Exercising might help you with your knee pain issue. But that does not mean you should hit the gym with your baby, not at all! Low-impact exercise will help you strengthen your knee-related muscles (like the quads) and that will help you protect your knee and alleviate pain around the area.

Since you cannot lift weights or go out for a run, you have to look for alternatives. Walking is the perfect thing for a pregnant woman – and it’ll be great after you give birth. Yoga can be a great ally against knee pain too. Bodyweight exercises can also help – but don’t overdo it!

3. Cold and heat therapy

If your pain does not allow you to exercise, you can resort to homemade items for pain relief.

This method is commonly used for minor injuries, but it’ll be of great help to you as well. The only thing you have to do is apply cold and heat to your knee for brief periods of time.

Apply cold to your knee for a minute, then place heat for another minute. That’s one round – you need to do it for 3 to 5 rounds and finish with one minute of ice at the end. You can do this several times per day, but always with one hour between each session. If a minute is too much, you can try 30-second rounds.

4. Massages – multiple times per day if necessary!

One of the many benefits of pregnancy is getting what you ask for – as long as you don’t abuse this trait! If your knee pain is too much – or if you simply want a little treat – you can ask for a massage from your SO.

If the knee pain is severe, you should see a physical therapist. They will give you a pain-alleviating massage and they will also guide you through prehab and rehab exercises for you to do at home.

The benefit of a physical therapist is that they can also diagnose other pain you may have like ankle pain. (Ankle Action is a great resource) This often comes with knee pain.

5. Get off your feet and get some rest

Sometimes, no matter what, your knees will bother you. Unfortunately, there’s not too much you can do but rest. Lift your legs off the ground, lay in bed, watch your favorite movie to get your mind off things and rest. Bonus points for comfort food!
