How To Support A Loved One Through Bereavement

How To Support A Loved One Through Bereavement

When somebody close to you suffers a loss, it’s difficult to figure out how you can properly support them during this tough time. As much as you want to be there for them, it’s hard to find the right words to say, and often you feel useless in your quests to make them feel better. Luckily there are a few great steps that you can follow in order to help your loved one get set on the road to recovery, so you needn’t watch them suffer for much longer. If you want to know more about what you can to support your nearest and dearest through bereavement, then read on to uncover which routes you can take to lift the mood and help them to heal.

Stand By Them

Leaving them to battle through upsetting situations on their own will not aid their recovery whatsoever, as you must stand by them and provide as much support as you possibly can. Go with them to any funeral directors appointments and be by their side when they have to make difficult decisions. It can be a tricky time and they may try to push you away and recluse into themselves, but this will not encourage them to progress forward. Of course they are going to be feeling a whole host of potentially confusing emotions that are hard to deal with, so be as patient as you can despite the mood they may be in.

Provide A Distraction

Sometimes the best thing that you can do to help improve their mood is provide a much needed distraction. Whether this be a day out somewhere, perhaps at a relaxing spa retreat or a trip to the cinema followed by a meal at their favourite restaurant. This will also help to show them that you care, and just having the knowledge that there are people around you who want to see you happy can encourage you to make a conscious decision to start healing. Taking their mind away from the negativity can be done in small ways too, by doing something such as gifting them an interesting book to get lost in, or perhaps gift vouchers so that they can treat themselves to a shopping trip – you could even bake them a cake or some cookies to show your support in the form of a tasty treat.

Supporting a loved one through bereavement can be quite a long and bumpy process, but hopefully by following the steps outlined above you can help your nearest and dearest to recover and heal as soon as possible. Try to stand by their side as much as you can, always offering a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. Let them know that they are not alone in their struggles, and make it known that you are always available. Providing a distraction in the form of a day out somewhere or even a small gift like a book can aid in taking their mind off some of their upsetting feelings, and doing something thoughtful like baking them a fresh batch of cookies will show your love and support.
