Choosing a Patio Design
There are many patio designs out there that can fit any average American home. But in this article, we will concentrate on building a paved patio. It is a dry-laid patio design and a good introductory guide for patios in general. If you want to add value to your home make sure to build a dry-laid patio as other categories can damage your lawn and pull down your home’s value in the long run.

Now that we’ve settled on a patio design, it’s time to measure the land we’re planning to build it on.

Measuring Build Space
The size of your patio depends mainly on you, just know that patios don’t have to be big. Consider these questions when measuring your patio:
– How many people do you want to be there at any given time?
– What’s the purpose of the patio?
– Are you planning to have some plants on your patio?

These questions can help you determine if you want to have a sizeable patio or not. If you’re planning to use it for outdoor parties with more than five people being there at any given time, then you should consider a bigger build space. If you’re only planning to utilize your patio for work or only have your family utilize it, then a smaller patio should do the job. Remember that it’s easier to add more space for your patio, but it’s harder to remove it, so be conservative if you can.

Remove Sod or Grass
Once you’ve outlined your build space, it’s time to remove any sod or grass from your chosen space. You can remove the sod or grass from your backyard by using a spade. Don’t dig too deep into the dirt, though, just remove the outermost layer. Exposing the dirt underneath will make it easy for you to build the foundation of your patio.
Once you’ve removed any sod or grass from your build space, we recommend you install some landscape fabric on top of the dirt. Although this isn’t a requirement, the fabric will make it so much easier for you to build your patio. We will be using flagstones in this guide, as it is the easiest material to build a patio with.

Start Placing Gravel or Sand
It’s time for you to add your first layer of foundation. This will be made out of gravel or sand. We recommend sand if you want a cheaper but flexible base. Gravel can be used if you’re planning to permanently use that area for a patio or if you don’t plan to renovate it in the future. Only put a layer of sand and gravel as a foundation.

Install Flagstones
Flagstones are cheap and can be bought almost anywhere. It’s great for this patio design because of its sturdiness and simplicity. Additionally, it’s easy to remove if you’re planning to renovate the patio area in the future.

To install flagstones into your patio, make sure to place them close to each other. This is to avoid weeds from growing between the spaces, while also making them stable enough for people to stand on. Place sand or gravel between the stones and repeat the same process until you’ve filled up your build area with it. Water the spaces between the patio to ensure that it’s durable enough to stand on by the end of the week.

Roofing
Once your patio is complete, you can start installing some roofing materials on top of it. There are many roof kits out there you can buy that are particularly easy to install. We recommend twin wall polycarbonate roofs, as those are the most sturdy in the market. They are also known to protect you from harsh sunlight especially late into the afternoon. A one-layer polycarbonate roof can also do the job, but it can be quite hot later into the afternoon.

Finishing Touches
Once you’ve done everything on this list, it’s time for the finishing touches. Finishing touches can be as simple as sweeping some excess sand and gravel on top of your patio to adding pieces of furniture on top of your patio. It’s all up to you now how to make it look perfect.

This is the simplest dry-laid patio guide you’ll ever see on the internet, and yes it is that simple to do! You might spend between $500 to $1,000 for this build but this depends primarily on the size of your patio. Give this project a shot, we assure you that it’s that simple to make.
