New To Invisible Aligners? Tips For Making Them A Worthwhile Endeavour

As an adult, misaligned teeth are far from fun and so is the wearing of metal orthodontic braces, which was once the only way to treat adult orthodontic issues.

In the last 10 or so years in dentistry, this has shifted and now, it is easier than ever before to straighten your teeth with discretion, using either clear braces or invisible aligners.

Unlike regular braces, these options are often removable and put more responsibility on the patient to clean them, change them and ensure that they are working, which can be tricky, especially with younger patients who may be prone to forgetting!

So, what are some tips for using Invisalign in Fulham? Read on to find out!

Cleaning

Many patients worry about how to keep their invisible aligners clean; after all, they will likely attract food and debris that will be far from subtle. The best way to clean them is by using cold water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Do not exert too much force when cleaning them, as this may cause them to split and never rinse them in hot water, as they may warp.

Staining

OK, so one of the best things about invisible aligners is just that; they are invisible.

And while it can be tempting to try and clean them with mouthwashes or toothpaste, you should aim to avoid this as it will cause staining. And a blue tinted aligner is far from an invisible one!

Timing

For these aligners to work, you need to keep them in your mouth for a minimum of 22 hours per day; that gives you 2 hours to eat your meals, brush your teeth or to play sports (if you wish to have the aligner out of your mouth). Keep an eye on the time!Initially, some dentists will advise that you try to keep the aligners in at all times, and gradually allow yourself time without them in your mouth. But until you have adjusted to the schedule, keep a timer on our phone or watch.

Waxing

Waxing your teeth?

Well, not in the traditional sense, but when you wear an invisible aligner, chances are that the plastic edges will be sharp against your tongue and inner cheeks. And so, in order to buffer them against blisters and sores, it is worth asking your dentist about dental wax. This will cushion the soft tissues against the sharp plastic, making the wearing of the aligners more bearable.

Coping

It is a sad reality that many dental patients presume that as this is a removable aligner, it won’t cause any discomfort.

What you have to remember is that these aligners are moving your teeth and, while they don’t need tightening, they will still be exerting a lot of force to achieve that goal. So, it is recommended that you purchase over the counter pain relief, especially for those 2 days after you have hanged aligners.

If this isn’t a reliable method or it fails to work, see your dentist for an assessment.
