Orthodontists – What Do They Do?

Orthodontists – What Do They Do?

The term orthodontist is one that you will have heard on numerous occasions in your lifetime. So what are orthodontists? An orthodontist in Liverpool is responsible for dealing with the aligning of crooked and uneven teeth. This is done using different techniques. The ultimate aim of this dental procedure is to provide you with your dream smile.

Why do people go to the orthodontist?

A lot of people in the UK do not like their teeth and therefore do not like their smile either. This often leads to social anxiety and a feeling of self consciousness and a lack of confidence. If you feel that you are one of these people then visit your local orthodontist who will be able to assist you with your individual needs and requirements.

What treatments are available at the orthodontist?

When you visit the orthodontists you will find that there are a number of treatments available to you. The main treatments that people often opt for are metal braces and Invisalign.

So what are the differences?

Metal braces and Invisalign both have the same function. They are designed to align crooked teeth and to bring them into their original position. The result? Aligned teeth and a confident-boosting smile!

Metal braces are often used for children and teenagers who require teeth alignment. These are available under the NHS for children and teenagers and, in rare cases, adults who urgently require teeth alignment. If you wish to have braces for cosmetic purposes you will need to pay for these. Metal braces get placed onto the surface of the teeth and are secured tightly in place. They act by moving the teeth slightly and overtime pushing them back to their original position. Treatment times for metal braces vary patient to patient according to their personal needs and requirements and the severity of the misalignment. However on average treatment times usually last between 12-24 months. During the treatment period patients will have 6-8 weekly check ups where the braces will be tightened and if there are any issues, the orthodontist will be able to deal with these then. Once the treatment is complete the orthodontist will give the patient retainers which are temporary braces that are like a gum shield and can be put into your mouth and taken out at leisure. This second part of the treatment usually lasts another 6 months and the purpose of retainers is to ensure that once the braces have been taken off that the teeth do not start misaligning again, as is usually common.

Adults often opt for Invisalign which is a private treatment and is not available under the NHS as it is purely for cosmetic purposes. Invisalign has the same purpose as metal braces – it helps to align teeth and bring them back to their original position. The difference between Invisalign and metal braces is that Invisalign is invisible whereas metal braces are attached to the front of the teeth and therefore very visible when talking, eating and opening your mouth.
