3 Tips for Brightening up a Dark Room

Is your living room darker than you would like? Maybe you face another building, resulting in low levels of light coming in? Or you don’t have many windows? Either way, living in a darker room can be frustrating. When it’s dark, the only option tends to be to turn your main lights on to brighten up the room as much as possible, however, this may not be what you want to do every day.

If you are feeling frustrated with not having much light coming in, there are a number of options that you could look into to brighten up a dark room. You could look into log effect electric fires – these add a nice warming light to the room. Another option would be to purchase a stand-up lamp or to use fairy lights (again these can be very cosy).

To help you with brightening up a room, below is our guide on tips for brightening up a dark room.

Install a set of fairy lights

Fairy lights are very cost-effective, easy to install and very cosy – especially in the winter months. There is a whole plethora of fairy lights that you can choose from, you could opt for coloured ones or your standard white ones. The lengths vary as do the style of the bulbs – some can be connected to your Google Home or Alexa system if you have it. Depending on the fairly lights you opt for, some run from solar, some from your mains whilst others are battery operated – it very much depends on which ones you would prefer.

Purchase a stand-up lamp

A slightly more expensive alternative to fairy lights would be a stand-up lamp. Depending on the size of the room you want to light up, you could purchase one or two lamps to add some extra light to the room. Lamps come in many different shapes and sizes, helping them fit the style of the room – some people like to use a stand-up lamp as a centrepiece. If you want to purchase smart bulbs, these allow you to add or take away light through an app on your phone as well as use different colours. Smart bulbs are also known to be energy efficient, helping you save money on your electricity bill.

Hang a mirror

Mirrors may not be a light source themselves but they are great for making a room look brighter and bigger at the same time. Mirrors reflect light, helping brighten up its surroundings. They can add another dynamic to the room and break up any large white spaces on the wall. The prices of mirrors vary a lot, helping you match a particular budget that you have in mind. The easiest way to get some inspiration for the type of mirror you would like is to visit your local interiors shop where they will have a range of mirrors for you to view.
