How Your Business Can Be Greener

In today’s world, sustainability and being environmentally aware have become more and more important. Businesses of all sizes have to play their own role in protecting the planet and reducing the impact they make on the environment. Not only does this benefit the environment as a whole, but it also means that business owners can engage more customers who want to buy from and work with eco-friendly businesses. It makes sense in that case to become as green as possible when you are in business, as it offers a multitude of different benefits. Read on to find out what you can do to make your business even greener than it already is or to start being greener if you don’t do anything already.

Use Eco-Friendly Materials

No matter what industry you might work in, you’re going to need to use some materials at some point. The best thing you can do is to look at how you might start using more eco-friendly materials instead of the potentially planet-damaging ones you’re using at the moment. When you do this, you reduce the impact you’re having on natural resources as well as reducing harmful waste.

You might be in aerospace or the automotive industry, for example, in which case using fibre reinforced polymers, known for being environmentally friendly, would be an excellent choice. Or perhaps you put your products in packaging to send out to customers. In that case, investigating more sustainable packaging ideas would be ideal. This is something customers can instantly see, and if you talk about it in your marketing, they’ll understand why it’s important.

Go Remote

Another great way to promote a greener business is to make it a remote-only (or at least remote-first) one. When you do this, you won’t need an office anymore, and that means you won’t need to use energy within an office to heat or cool it, and you won’t be using any electricity. It’s true that people working from home will be using these things, but it’s highly likely they would be used anyway, so it’s not something that is an added burden to the environment.

Another factor to consider here is that when people are working from home, they won’t have to travel to work. They won’t have to drive or even take public transport, and since reducing the number of vehicles on the road is a good thing for the planet, this is a positive step.

To add to this, you’ll save money when you offer remote working to your team as you won’t have to pay for a building. Although this is not an environmental factor, it’s still a positive thing for your bottom line.

Waste Reduction

Waste reduction is a crucial part of taking care of the planet, and it’s something that all businesses, no matter what size, can undertake. To begin with, educate your employees about recycling and make sure you give them access to recycling bins that are properly and clearly labelled. You’ll need different bins for different materials, including paper and card, glass, plastic, and organic waste.

With regards to organic waste, it might be possible to set up a composting system for your business. It will depend on how much food waste you generate (some businesses will make more than others) and if you have outdoor space to make the compost, but if it is possible, it’s a great idea.
