Top 5 Tips to Prepare Your Garden for Winter

Winter is fast approaching, and with it brings freezing temperatures. So before it gets too cold, it’s a good idea to head out and prepare your garden for the wintery months ahead. Even if you aren’t green-fingered, these five tips are easy to achieve. Ensuring that your garden is as low maintenance as possible when spring comes around, you won’t have to worry about having to completely transform your garden.

Clean Up The Leaves/Rotting Plants

Not only do leaves and rotting plants look untidy, but they can harbour disease and pests. Autumn is the perfect opportunity to get rid of this dead vegetation and leaves – clearing them with a rake or broom. Making sure that they don’t clog up your gutters or create a safety risk for people walking on your garden path, it will set your garden up for winter nicely.

Cut Down Branches/Trees

When winter approaches, you can expect windy and wet temperatures. And because of this, your house might be in danger from stray branches. In order to prepare it for these conditions, consider getting Lineage Tree Care or a similar arboriculturist in to trim back your trees. Giving you the peace of mind that you need, you’ll know that your house is protected.

Take Any Vegetable Plants Inside

If possible, bring any vegetable plants (such as a tomato plant) inside. They won’t survive the harsh weather that this country brings – so it’s a good idea to try and bring them inside. If they are at the end of their life, consider putting the plants into a compost. This can then be used to soil your future plants.

Clean and Sharpen Your Garden Tools

Although most gardeners will keep their tools clean throughout the year, when it comes to winter, this motivation could be lost. In Autumn, consider rejuvenating your tools so that they are ready to use again in spring. As well as removing all of the dirt and debris from them, consider oiling them with light machine oil. Sealing the metal, it will protect them from oxidation.

Cover Crops

Alternatively to bringing plants inside, if you don’t have the space, consider covering the crops. Preventing soil erosion and protecting its quality, they won’t be affected when the weather starts to drop.
