You shouldn’t have to settle for anything less than what you want because remember, you will be working for a large portion of your life, so you want to make sure it is something you are happy with. #1 Identify what you want to do

You may be clear on what exactly you would like to do. However, if you are not, then you may choose to start by identifying your strengths and passions. Write a list of all the tasks you like to do and have enjoyed in your daily life and/or previous roles, or while you were in education. This is a great place to start, to ensure you don’t work towards a career that does not suit you, your interests and your values. You can then use this information to see what kind of job roles match your skills and interests and would be a good fit for you.

#2 Acquire the relevant skills

Once you have established your skills, passions and potential career routes, you should ensure you have the relevant skills to conduct the job. You can do this by reviewing job descriptions to see what skills and qualifications are common. You can then work towards the right qualifications, or obtain the necessary skills, to ensure you are competent when making an application. You can also see if you can get any work experience to boost your resume. It is important to note that you do not always have to obtain every skill, as some employers are happy for you to learn on the job, as long as you have the willingness to do so.

#3 Network

Networking is a powerful strategy for anyone looking to boost their career and employability. Networking, either at in-person events, or joining conference calls, will enable you to meet professionals in your industry, make valuable contacts, learn new ideas and perspectives, and keep up-to-date with the industry. You may also find your next employer, or gain a valuable opportunity!

#4 Search in the right places

Depending on what you are looking for, there are a variety of platforms available to choose from. For example, if you are looking for work from home jobs for mums, your search will look very different to a person looking to work in a corporate office in the centre of town. Job hunting can be extremely time consuming, so make sure you are looking on reliable and relevant platforms according to your preferences.

It is never too late to start or change your career to work your dream job.
