Style

Many people think that when it comes to designing and creating a room, style is an action you do at the end to make sure that the finished product looks its best. However, style is actually the very core of creating a successful room of all time, because it defines many of the boundaries you will need to keep within.

For example, opulence is more of a feeling than a style, as you can have opulent eclectic dining rooms, opulent traditional style dining rooms, and even opulent modern style dining rooms. Indeed, in this way, we can conceptualize style as relating to an approach to decorating or even an era in time.

Of course, the suggestions below can be applied to any style, but knowing the way you want to go before you begin is vital if you want to end up with an opulent room that is to your liking. After all, there is little point in designing and creating an opulently eclectic style room if you are looking for something sleeker and more modern.

Choosing the right colours

Once you have a style or era in mind you can begin to put together a color pallet. Now there are several ways to go about this, the first of which is to bring together textiles or other items that you like the look of and pick out the hues used there.

Another option is to use a colour recommendation service and allow them to create a pallet that works well together. These can be particularly useful if you have a single base shade in mind, as they can help you find accents that work well, something you can pick out with other aspects of your decor such as textiles, and ornaments.

When it comes to choosing your base colour you will need to think carefully about the shape of the room, the amount of light, and the overall style you are going for. Usually, it will be a neutral tone, but these can range from bright white to deep black. Although, as a rule, an opulent feel will most easily be created with deeper tones such as dark warm grey, but done right lighter shades can work well too especially if you opt for gloss finishes.

Finishes

While we are on the subject of finishing, these can make a big difference to the success of an opulent dining room. In particular, you will be looking to use high-end finishes here such as mirrored surfaces, metallics, and as mentioned above gloss.

Don’t panic if you can’t afford to kit your whole room out in these materials though, as using them as accents can work just as well. For example, instead of burning through your budget on a massive gilt frame mirror, why not use some mirrored tiles, or even place settings to give them the same feel in the room?

Lighting

Lighting has a significant part to play when creating an opulent dining area. It is particularly important to note that the overall brightness of the room should be kept at a lower level than usual. The reason being that this can help to create a calmer and more opulent vibe. With this in mind using fixtures that diffuse the light, rather than focus it in a single area is the best.

Chandeliers in particular are a great option, as they also provide more metallic and glass real estate to add to the opulent feel. They also come in a variety of styles, so no matter what look you are going for, you should be able to find something that works for your room.

Alternatively, up-lighters on the walls or groups of pendant lights can work very well too. Especially if they are simple in design and finished in metallic materials. Just be sure to go for frosted glass shades so the light remains soft.

Rich textiles

One of the most vital aspects of an opulent dining room to get right are the textiles that you use. Indeed, while there may not be a couch to consider, there are still a great variety of textiles that need to be carefully chosen including curtains, carpets, rugs, table cloths, chairs, cushions, and even napkins.

Of course, the key to choosing the right textiles for your opulent dining room is to find pieces made from fabrics that are soft, luxurious and tactile, but that also fit in with your overall style. Consider velvet, or jacquard curtains, or even fabrics with a hint of metallics running through their thread.

Also contrasting different types of fabrics works well here, as it can feel as if there are layers upon layers of opulence to enjoy. One way to do this is to choose something like these knocker dining chairs in velvet, to surround your dining table and then place a silk rug underneath. Then use a crisp white cotton table cloth with a high thread count with an embroidered runner on top.

The devil is in the detail

Finally, do not forget that when it comes to creating an opulent dining room, it is important to have an eye for detail. What this means is choosing a few pieces that really enhance the overall look of your room.

In a dining room environment, this may mean choosing a dinner service that has gold edging, or finding artwork in rich colours to display on the walls. Silk or real flowers, if you have the budget can also work to create layers of texture and interest that excite the eye and the senses.

It may even mean creating an opulent centre piece of your own. In fact, this can be a wonderful way to bring all the elements of your dining room together, and ensure that from the moment your guest sets foot in it, they experience its full luxury and opulence.
